{"id":9311,"date":"2025-02-01T05:04:24","date_gmt":"2025-02-01T05:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=9311"},"modified":"2025-02-01T05:04:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-01T05:04:24","slug":"citing-scaling-challenges-fintech-cushion-shuts-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=9311","title":{"rendered":"Citing scaling challenges, fintech Cushion shuts down"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure\">  <\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Cushion, a fintech startup for negotiating bank fees, has shuttered its doors.<\/p>\n<p>Founder and CEO Paul Kesserwani announced the decision via a <ps-link><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/paulkesserwani_at-the-end-of-last-year-we-made-the-tough-activity-7290783062534037504-Pe1N\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAAyEiMByBYO4n6-VczZmD3Y2N2vRH_tb7k\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>LinkedIn post<\/u><\/a><\/ps-link> on Thursday, saying that &#8220;despite bringing multiple new fintech products to market, we didn&#8217;t reach the scale needed to sustain the business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-float=\"\" data-align-left=\"\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<figure class=\"Figure\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arizent.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/0dd04d3\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/800x800+0+0\/resize\/1024x1024!\/quality\/90\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsource-media-brightspot.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2F37%2F3d%2Fbe969ffb4d3bae4e5655ee3366ad%2Fpaul-kesserwani-cushion.jpeg\">  <\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;To build a sustainable, venture-scale business, we needed to reach tens of millions in [annual recurring revenue], but we never hit that escape velocity,&#8221; Kesserwani said in an email. &#8220;We made some pivots along the way \u2014 some showed early signs of traction, with one hitting $3 million in ARR in 10 months, but ultimately, it was more of a feature than a sustainable product.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We faced the reality that Cushion wasn&#8217;t on track for a massive exit, and it made more sense to wind down rather than continue investing time and money,&#8221; Kesserwani said.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to wind down the San Francisco-based company was made at the end of 2024, according to the post.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I gave Cushion everything I had for 8+ years,&#8221; Kesserwani said in his LinkedIn post. &#8220;While the outcome wasn&#8217;t what we hoped for, we built something that moved the industry forward \u2014 and I&#8217;m proud of that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cushion used artificial intelligence to help consumers <ps-link><u>dispute overdraft and other banking fees<\/u><\/ps-link> and negotiate refunds. Cushion also expanded into the buy now\/pay later space by building a feature for users to <ps-link><u>pay their BNPL bills<\/u><\/ps-link> from a single dashboard and then give that payment data to Experian to build their credit score.<\/p>\n<p>Cushion was featured in Plaid&#8217;s <ps-link><a href=\"https:\/\/plaid.com\/plaid-for-fintech-startups-ebook\/?utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_source=linkedin&amp;utm_campaign=5_SUPs_Building_Fintech_App_with_Plaid&amp;utm_content=carousel\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Scale Up e-book<\/u><\/a><\/ps-link> in September 2024 as one of &#8220;5 startups building the next great fintech app with Plaid.&#8221; Cushion partnered with <ps-link><a href=\"https:\/\/plaid.com\/customer-stories\/cushion\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Plaid back in 2017<\/u><\/a><\/ps-link> to connect to financial institutions and pull transaction data.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, the company&#8217;s relationship with Plaid expanded as they pivoted toward BNPL bill management services. &#8220;Plaid doesn&#8217;t just provide the infrastructure that we leverage and use but also the data, insights, and tooling we need to innovate at the cutting edge of consumer bill pay,&#8221; Kesserwani said in a video interview with Plaid in <ps-link><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LN0Yd7nIX8s&amp;t=1s\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>September 2024<\/u><\/a><\/ps-link>.<\/p>\n<p>In Thursday&#8217;s LinkedIn post, Kesserwani said that Cushion had &#8220;automated bank fee negotiation,&#8221; securing $15 million in refunds for customers and processing over $300 million in BNPL loans.
