We were married 30 years when he died. I now have a partner of 14 years. We\u2019ve been discussing getting married. Will I lose the Social Security if I remarry? And if I remarry, could I get Social Security from my second husband if he should die?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 On Bended Knee<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dear Bended,<\/p>\n<p>There are many reasons to get married and many to stay unmarried, and unfortunately, money often weighs into that decision. It\u2019s wise to consider how your legal relationship status could affect your access to resources that are tied to any spouse.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you can follow your heart! Depending on your age, remarrying won\u2019t compromise your payments.<\/p>\n<p>You might be eligible for three types of Social Security benefits I\u2019ll talk about here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Retirement benefits, those you receive on your own account as the worker who has retired.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Survivor\u2019s benefits, those you receive from your deceased spouse\u2019s account.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Spouse\u2019s benefits, those you receive when you\u2019re married to a living Social Security beneficiary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re 60 years old or older when you remarry (50 if you\u2019re disabled), you\u2019ll still be eligible to receive your survivor\u2019s benefits from your deceased husband\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>If your new partner is a Social Security beneficiary, you\u2019d become eligible to draw your spouse\u2019s benefits on his account when you marry, and you would be eligible to receive survivor\u2019s benefits if he died. The caveat is that you won\u2019t receive the full amount of both of their benefits at the same time. You\u2019ll receive a combination of the two benefits equal to the higher amount.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/survivors\/ifyou.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Security Administration recommends<\/a> applying for spouse\u2019s benefits if you remarry. It won\u2019t hurt your survivor\u2019s benefit, and it could mean receiving more money if your partner\u2019s benefits are higher than what you currently receive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adBorder\" id=\"thepe-1304489298\">\n<h3>The 8 Best Ways to Earn a Passive Income in 2024<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard the term passive income.
