They can be particularly attractive to people with poor or no credit histories. There\u2019s been press over the years arguing that the Gen Z demographic \u2014 those born between 1997 and 2023 \u2014 has been particularly enamored of the arrangements and that somehow it is putting them in debt more than any other generation.<\/p>\n<p>Except, they aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Buy Now Pay Later<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with BNPL programs. In theory, they can sound fine for someone without available credit, or who doesn\u2019t want to use up more: installation payments that sometimes can be completed without interest. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/compliance\/compliance-resources\/consumer-cards-resources\/buy-now-pay-later-bnpl-products\/buy-now-pay-later-product-faqs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/compliance\/compliance-resources\/consumer-cards-resources\/buy-now-pay-later-bnpl-products\/buy-now-pay-later-product-faqs\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/compliance\/compliance-resources\/consumer-cards-resources\/buy-now-pay-later-bnpl-products\/buy-now-pay-later-product-faqs\/\" aria-label=\"Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explained\">Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explained<\/a>, the loans generally ranged from $50 to $1,000, spread across four payments. There are late fees if the buyer misses a payment and there can be fees for declined payments. They reported that consumers can overextend themselves and things get worse if the consumers use a credit card for payment because that opens the potential to carrying credit charges over months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that the increased cost-of-living and inflation have put more people in a situation where they\u2019re already relying on revolving credit,\u201d Mark Elliott, chief customer officer at financial services company LendingClub, told AP. \u201cThe psychographics of \u2018buy now, pay later\u2019 may be different \u2014 people don\u2019t think of it as debt \u2014 but it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4448715\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4448715\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4448715\" aria-label=\"Researchers\">Researchers<\/a> from Goethe University Frankfurt, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Duke University found that the process effectively offers \u201clower prices to low-creditworthiness customers.\u201d BNPL increases sales by 20% and the benefits to the merchant outweigh their costs.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Childers, consumer financial expert for personal-finance technology company Credit Karma, told AP that internal data showed credit card balances up more than 50% for Gen Z and millennial members since March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>That last statement can be stretched further than perhaps other data would suggest. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/27\/gen-z-millennial-credit-card-debt-buy-now-pay-later\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/27\/gen-z-millennial-credit-card-debt-buy-now-pay-later\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/27\/gen-z-millennial-credit-card-debt-buy-now-pay-later\/\" aria-label=\"Fortune ran the following headline\">Fortune ran the following headline<\/a>, \u201cGen Z is drowning in debt as buy-now-pay-later services skyrocket: \u2018They\u2019re continuing to bury their heads in the sand and spend\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The credit card balance growth is concerning. But does Gen Z need lectures from everyone else?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subhead3-embed color-body bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">The Real State of Debt<\/h3>\n<p>Gen Z members often get criticized from all ends. It may be that Gen Z is at the low end because of their stage of life. Perhaps this will increase over time.
