A dupe gift is\u00a0a gift that is a cheaper alternative to a more expensive, branded item. They were largely kept under the radar until recently because a &#8220;fake&#8221; was dubbed inferior to the real thing, but a lot has changed.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases these brand imitators are now even preferred to their pricier counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>Here are the best ways to save money this holiday season<br \/>28% of credit card users are still paying off last year&#8217;s holiday tab<br \/>Holiday shoppers plan to spend more<\/p>\n<p>This year, 79% of consumers said they would buy a\u00a0dupe as a gift for their loved ones for the holidays, according to a survey of more than 1,000 shoppers by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couponcabin.com\/blog\/how-consumers-feel-about-cheaper-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CouponCabin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than half \u2014 51% \u2014 of those who the coupon site polled said dupes are better<em>\u00a0<\/em>than the original.<\/p>\n<p>Even when consumers can get the real thing, nearly 33% of adults\u00a0intentionally purchased a dupe\u00a0of a premium product at some point, a separate report by Morning Consult also found. The business intelligence company polled more than 2,000 adults in early October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>When is a dupe an appropriate gift?\u00a0<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Before you buy a dupe, think about who you&#8217;re shopping for, experts say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For instance, some family members or friends might especially appreciate a dupe for what it is, said Ellyn Briggs, a brands analyst at Morning Consult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s kind of a badge of honor for young people to get a dupe,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, you risk disappointing someone if they have been asking for a specific product for a while, said Melanie Lowe, CouponCabin&#8217;s savings expert<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If that is the case, consider the cost of the name-brand item and assess if it is within budget. The key is to know when to splurge or save, Lowe said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re talking about a product that you&#8217;ll use daily \u2026 invest in the original,&#8221; Lowe said. &#8220;That purchase is usually worth it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, &#8220;if it seems appropriate in the situation \u2014 if it is a more light-hearted gift \u2014 you can definitely go the dupe route,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>&#8216;It&#8217;s a dupe for a reason&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While some shoppers take pride in buying dupes, roughly 86% of shoppers have been disappointed by their purchase of a\u00a0dupe, CouponCabin found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a dupe for a reason,&#8221; said Lauren Beitelspacher, professor of marketing at Babson College. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know where it&#8217;s made, who is making it or the quality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108055480\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108055480\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000356518\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not that all dupes are bad. But sometimes we are paying a premium because there is a quality difference \u2014 and we, as consumers, have to be more conscious of that,&#8221; Beitelspacher said.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to shop for dupes, read and watch product reviews online to help determine the dupe&#8217;s quality \u2014 this is where social media can come in handy.<\/p>\n<p>A majority, or 62%, of U.S. adults who use TikTok say they use the app for reviews or recommendations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/11\/21\/a-majority-of-us-tiktok-users-are-there-for-reviews-and-recommendations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according <\/a>to a new study by the Pew Research Center.\u00a0Others tap Instagram and Facebook for product research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"><\/a>Shopping secondhand this season<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers should make the same value considerations when buying secondhand, which has also become more popular, even for gifting.<\/p>\n<p>Three in 4 shoppers said that giving secondhand gifts has become more accepted over the past year \u2014 notching a 7% increase from the year before, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/recommercereport.com\/__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!ryrH8L_T5QMhmzFC9ZTODEwLXqwn8jasHp50_8y33Ii9TZ_YGYu0gRdLDDnNvC-CL-tBAYBTudOMLYEUh7rUDdAJ2hrXmfH1yJ9SJg%24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a02024 OfferUp recommerce report<\/a>.\u00a0OfferUp, an online marketplace for buying and selling new and used items, polled 1,500 adults in July.<\/p>\n<p>The majority, or 83%, of shoppers are also open to receiving secondhand gifts this holiday season, the report found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Shoppers have increasingly turned to resale for a number of reasons, including value,\u00a0sustainability and as a means to secure hard-to-find luxury items. Because secondhand shopping<strong> <\/strong>is considered eco-friendly, it&#8217;s also become more socially acceptable.
