This sounds like a difficult challenge for your family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t strict guidelines for when you can bring a civil lawsuit. Whether you could likely win your money depends on the evidence you bring and what you\u2019re asking for. Speak with an attorney to consider the viability of your case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a civil lawsuit, \u201ca plaintiff must show that, given all the evidence, the defendant most likely engaged in action (or inaction) for which the plaintiff should receive a remedy,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/legal\/personal-injury\/civil-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Forbes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you didn\u2019t have a specific (and, ideally, written and signed) agreement about what you\u2019d get in return for giving your stepdaughter money, you might have a hard time proving you suffered an injury she has to remedy with repayment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, your circumstances involve much more than money changing hands. You can celebrate giving her that, even if your relationship was in a bad place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before pursuing a lawsuit centered on recovering money, consider whether that is, in fact, the injury you want to remedy. We often turn to money as a proxy for emotional wounds \u2014 whether it\u2019s shopping to soothe anxiety or focusing on splitting assets in a divorce \u2014 but, once the money is settled, the wound is still there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself: What is the pain you want to address with your stepdaughter (and, if relevant, with her biological mom and your husband)? Does it require a financial remedy?
