But because the levies likely would reduce current and future US incomes, corporate and individual income tax revenues would decline by about $2.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s 20 percent worldwide tariff plus his 60 percent tariff on Chinese goods would reduce imports by about <a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/model-estimates\/t24-0077-options-increase-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/model-estimates\/t24-0077-options-increase-tariffs\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/model-estimates\/t24-0077-options-increase-tariffs\" aria-label=\"$9 trillion over 10 years\">$9 trillion over 10 years<\/a>. Imports include common consumer goods such as many fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing, medicine, appliances, and furniture. They also include materials used by US producers, such as auto makers and home builders.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s tariff on Mexican autos would raise an additional $84 billion over 10 years. It would reduce imports of those vehicles by about $800 billion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A 10 Percent Worldwide Tariff<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/taxvox\/tpc-trump-tariffs-would-raise-household-taxes-and-slow-imports\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/taxvox\/tpc-trump-tariffs-would-raise-household-taxes-and-slow-imports\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/taxpolicycenter.org\/taxvox\/tpc-trump-tariffs-would-raise-household-taxes-and-slow-imports\" aria-label=\"Earlier this year, TPC\u2019s analyzed a smaller tariff proposed by Trump\">Earlier this year, TPC\u2019s analyzed a smaller tariff proposed by Trump<\/a>\u2014a 10 percent tax on all imports combined with the 60 percent levy on Chinese imports. TPC found that version would raise $2.8 trillion in net revenue over 10 years and reduce average after-tax incomes of US households in 2025 by about $1,800, or 1.8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>That relatively less aggressive tariff plan itself would generate about $4.6 trillion in gross new revenues. But like the 20 percent version, it also would lower projected domestic incomes and produce much less total revenue after taking into account declines in corporate and individual income tax revenues.<\/p>\n<p>Both versions of Trump\u2019s tariffs could significantly raise prices of imported goods since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/publications\/policy-briefs\/2024\/why-trumps-tariff-proposals-would-harm-working-americans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/publications\/policy-briefs\/2024\/why-trumps-tariff-proposals-would-harm-working-americans\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.piie.com\/publications\/policy-briefs\/2024\/why-trumps-tariff-proposals-would-harm-working-americans\" aria-label=\"they\u2019d mostly be passed on to US consumers\">they\u2019d mostly be passed on to US consumers<\/a> and businesses. That would shrink both inflation-adjusted domestic incomes and income tax revenues.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Reserve could raise interest rates to offset those price increases. But that likely would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaronflaaen.com\/uploads\/3\/1\/2\/4\/31243277\/flaaen_pierce_tariffs_manufacturing.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aaronflaaen.com\/uploads\/3\/1\/2\/4\/31243277\/flaaen_pierce_tariffs_manufacturing.pdf\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.aaronflaaen.com\/uploads\/3\/1\/2\/4\/31243277\/flaaen_pierce_tariffs_manufacturing.pdf\" aria-label=\"reduce profits of US corporations and incomes of US workers\">reduce profits of US corporations and incomes of US workers<\/a>, and lower projected corporate and individual tax revenues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Counting Retaliation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>None of the TPC estimates take into account retaliation by US trading partners whose exports would be hit by the tariffs. However, experience suggests those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details\/?pubid=102979\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details\/?pubid=102979\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/pub-details\/?pubid=102979\" aria-label=\"countries would respond by raising tariffs on goods and services imported from the US,\">countries would respond by raising tariffs on goods and services imported from the US,<\/a> which would shrink demand for US-made products and cost US workers\u2019 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris has largely been silent on her tariff plans.
