But that was before the Iran war, which is threatening to upend household budgets.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/microeconomics\/sce#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Federal Reserve survey<\/a>\u00a0released Monday found that consumers expected\u00a0inflation\u00a0to be lower in the year ahead, and households, overall, said they were<strong> <\/strong>better off than a year ago.\u00a0The New York Fed&#8217;s monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations was fielded from Feb. 2 through Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p>That same day, the U.S. and Israel\u00a0attacked Iran, causing the biggest oil supply disruption in history. What experts say about AI and tax prep<\/li>\n<li>CNBC&#8217;s Financial Advisor 100: Best financial advisors, top firms ranked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Now, affordability concerns are likely to worsen quickly, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rising oil prices have a direct and immediate impact on consumer costs, and not only at the gas pump,&#8221; said certified financial planner Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate. &#8220;Unlike last year&#8217;s higher tariffs, which took months to filter meaningfully into prices, increases in oil prices are quickly reflected,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An immediate spike in gasoline prices strains household budgets and also raises the cost of shipping, airline tickets, and products that rely on oil-based inputs,&#8221; Kates said.<\/p>\n<p>Renewed inflationary pressures in the wake of the\u00a0joint U.S.-Israel strike also helped push the yield on the benchmark <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-24\">10-year Treasury<span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> up more than 4 basis points to 4.173%.\u00a0The yield on the 10-year note is a barometer for mortgage rates and other types of loans.<\/p>\n<p>Most Americans&#8217; largest liability is their\u00a0home mortgage. The average rate for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage rose to 6.14% as of Monday, up from 5.99% at the end of February, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/mortgage-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mortgage News Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly also\u00a0told CNBC on Friday\u00a0that higher prices at the gas pump, coupled with &#8220;inflation printing above target,&#8221; create an even more challenging environment for everyday Americans. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think it really feels comforting to consumers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Up next: The Fed&#8217;s March interest rate decision<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In the face of geopolitical upheaval, inflation\u00a0pressures and an unclear outlook for tariffs and fiscal policy, Federal Reserve officials will meet next week and announce a decision on interest rates.
