However, consumers may have a little bit of wiggle room on that time frame, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/faqs-for-modification-of-sections-25c-25d-25e-30c-30d-45l-45w-and-179d-under-public-law-119-21-139-stat-72-july-4-2025-commonly-known-as-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-obbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new document<\/a> released by the Internal Revenue Service.<\/p>\n<p>The tax credits, worth up to $7,500, were scrapped as part of a Republican tax and spending measure passed in July. The law says consumers don&#8217;t qualify for a tax break if the EV is &#8220;acquired after&#8221; Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>Some observers initially thought that meant an EV had to be &#8220;placed in service&#8221; by that date \u2014 meaning that consumers had to be in physical possession of the car.<\/p>\n<p>However, the IRS clarified that&#8217;s not the case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108186721\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108186721\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000385839\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If a taxpayer acquires an EV by having a &#8220;written binding contract in place&#8221; and makes a payment on or before Sept. 30, they&#8217;d be entitled to claim the federal tax credit when they eventually take possession of the vehicle \u2014 even if that&#8217;s after Sept. 30, the IRS said in a set of answers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/faqs-for-modification-of-sections-25c-25d-25e-30c-30d-45l-45w-and-179d-under-public-law-119-21-139-stat-72-july-4-2025-commonly-known-as-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-obbb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frequently asked questions<\/a> issued Aug. 21.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This means that if you can&#8217;t drive off in the clean vehicle of your dreams by Sept. 30, there is still hope,&#8221; said Ingrid Malmgren, senior policy director at Plug In America, a nonprofit advocating for a quicker transition to electric cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>What lower interest rates would mean for mortgage refinancing<br \/>Few 401(k) savers use this option for tax-free growth<br \/>Why &#8216;quiet cracking&#8217; at work is dangerous<\/p>\n<p>The IRS update applies to used, new and leased EVs, according to the IRS document. They correspond with sections 25E, 30D and 45W of the tax code, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can order the vehicle from the dealer or manufacturer, sign the contract, put down a deposit by Sept. 30 and take possession of it later,&#8221; Malmgren said.<\/p>\n<p>Making a payment might also mean making a vehicle trade-in, Malmgren said.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the vehicle and consumer would still need to meet certain eligibility criteria to qualify for a federal tax credit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers can still receive the tax credit as an instant rebate when taking possession of the vehicle, Malmgren said, instead of waiting to file their annual tax return next year.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from getting the money more quickly, there&#8217;s an additional benefit: Consumers who choose to get the tax credit at the point of sale don&#8217;t need to have a tax liability in order to get the funds.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers should ensure they get a time-of-sale report from the dealer when picking up their EV or within three days of picking it up, according to the IRS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Don\u2019t miss these insights from CNBC PRO<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/31\/how-to-get-7500-ev-tax-credit-after-the-deadline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinology | Moment | Getty Images A federal tax break for consumers who buy or lease electric vehicles will disappear after Sept. 30.
