Take care of yourself, one said, so you won\u2019t be a burden to your children one day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">You can take out loans for college, but not for retirement, another noted. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">We asked financial experts the same question. How can parents juggle these two competing <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">financial goals<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _2w4PM3 _1My7YX\" data-currency=\"Text\"><span class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Think about your family\u2019s priorities<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">The decision may not be so cut-and-dried for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">As with other kinds of personal finance decisions, this one comes down to very personal choices, says Kevin Mahoney, a certified financial planner and founder of Illumint, a financial planning firm for millennials based in Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cSome people have a specific retirement lifestyle in mind, which has significant implications for how much money they\u2019ll need in retirement,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Similarly, he adds, some families are committed to paying whatever is needed for college to ensure their children can attend the school they want.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">How people value those two experiences can determine where they want to put their money, Mahoney says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _2w4PM3 _1My7YX\" data-currency=\"Text\"><span class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Put yourself first<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">The sentiment among the Reddit responses was to prioritize your own needs, which experts agree is sound advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cJust like on an airplane, put your own oxygen mask on first,\u201d says Marguerita Cheng, a certified financial planner and CEO of Blue Ocean Global Wealth in Gaithersburg, Maryland. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cThere\u2019s all kinds of financial aid for your child, but there\u2019s no financial aid for retirement,\u201d she adds, echoing the Reddit comments. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">That\u2019s why she suggests prioritizing <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">saving for retirement<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"> \u2014 as well as an emergency fund \u2014 before turning to college savings.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _2w4PM3 _1My7YX\" data-currency=\"Text\"><span class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Get an early start, if possible<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cYou want to magnify the compounding effect of your retirement savings, so the earlier you begin saving, the better,\u201d says Steven Conners, founder and president of Conners Wealth Management in Scottsdale, Arizona. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">A lot of people find themselves unprepared when it comes time to retire, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">At the very minimum, Conners suggests, if your job offers a retirement plan with an employer match, contribute enough to get the match. Doing so early gives your money the best chance to grow. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Then, with your contributions on autopilot, you can turn to college savings, which can also compound. A <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">529 plan<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"> allows your money to grow tax-free when used for qualifying education expenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Because, as one Redditor suggested, saving for both (retirement and college) is ideal. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">College plans also allow for flexibility: You can transfer plans between children and leftover money can be rolled into a Roth IRA in the beneficiary\u2019s name. There is a lifetime limit of $35,000, as long as the account has been open for at least 15 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _2w4PM3 _1My7YX\" data-currency=\"Text\"><span class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Adjust as you go<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Even if you only have a little money available to set aside for retirement or <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">general savings<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"> each month, don\u2019t wait, says Cheng.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">As young children transition to school and child care costs decrease, you might be able to contribute more and focus on college savings accounts, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cThe most important thing is to start,\u201d Cheng says, even if you\u2019re only setting aside $50 a month and scaling up from there. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">If you lose your job or experience another type of financial hardship, it\u2019s OK to pause savings into both accounts until you recover, Mahoney says. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Another option is to set money aside in a savings or <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">brokerage account<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"> that doesn\u2019t come with tax benefits, but gives you maximum flexibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cIf someone is really conflicted, it\u2019s OK to just invest in a brokerage account and let it grow, then you can make the choice later on,\u201d Mahoney says. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _2w4PM3 _1My7YX\" data-currency=\"Text\"><span class=\"_3P4ktl zeCuXk _28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Familiarize yourself with payment options<\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Mahoney likes to remind clients that savings aren\u2019t the only way to <\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">pay for college<\/span><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">. There\u2019s also scholarships, student loans and other discounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Try getting your kids involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Conners says requiring kids to have a part-time job or to otherwise contribute to their college expenses can be a useful life lesson. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">It can also teach them to appreciate the value of college more. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3VJt4n\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">\u201cIf they realize some of the cost themselves, it\u2019s not totally on the parent,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_3wlVa6 _2247K8\">\n<p class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_98KgO7 _28z5Fp _3-to_p\"><span class=\"_28z5Fp _3-to_p\">Reddit is an online forum where users share their thoughts in \u201cthreads\u201d on various topics.
