{"id":19195,"date":"2025-08-08T15:08:53","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T15:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=19195"},"modified":"2025-08-08T15:08:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T15:08:53","slug":"bank-of-england-governor-denies-rift-with-government-over-revolut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=19195","title":{"rendered":"Bank of England governor denies rift with government over Revolut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108011579\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Revolut cards is seen in this illustration photo taken in Krakow, Poland on March 29, 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>LONDON \u2014 Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey told CNBC there hasn&#8217;t been a &#8220;falling out&#8221; with the U.K. government over delays to fintech giant Revolut&#8217;s long-awaited bank license.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6677d91a-ee1f-483b-b09d-5aada80f43cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times reported\u00a0<\/a>that a meeting arranged by British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves with Revolut and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) \u2014 an arm of the BOE that oversees banks \u2014 was cancelled after an intervention from Bailey.<\/p>\n<p>Authorizing Revolut as a fully licensed bank has become an important issue for the U.K. government, particularly as key figures in the tech industry have challenged tax changes that affect the wealthy.<\/p>\n<p>However, in an interview with CNBC&#8217;s Ritika Gupta on Thursday, Bailey denied any suggestion that relations between the BOE and Treasury had soured over delays to Revolut&#8217;s bank license approval process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s been no falling out between [Reeves] and I on this, or indeed on anything,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Actually, we have very good relations, and I think both the Bank and the Treasury have made that clear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bailey added that while he couldn&#8217;t comment too much on Revolut specifically, the Prudential Regulation Authority is working things through with the digital banking startup during its &#8220;mobilization&#8221; process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108183510\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108183510\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000385060\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The fintech giant was\u00a0granted\u00a0a banking license with restrictions in July 2024\u00a0from the U.K.&#8217;s PRA, bringing an end to a years-long application process that began back in 2021. <\/p>\n<p>This key victory moved Revolut into what&#8217;s known as the &#8220;mobilization&#8221; phase of a company&#8217;s journey toward becoming a full-fledged bank.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, firms are limited to holding only \u00a350,000 of total customer deposits \u2014 well below the hundreds of billions of pounds customers deposit with major high street lenders such as\u00a0Barclays,\u00a0HSBC\u00a0and\u00a0Santander.<\/p>\n<p>Revolut customers in the U.K. are also still served by the company&#8217;s e-money unit, instead of its banking entity.
