For recently admitted applicants, current students and this year&#8217;s graduating class, he says, &#8220;remain steadfast in that goal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And for Harvard hopefuls, particularly from abroad, there could be a benefit to applying in the upcoming cycle even amid the ongoing political strife. &#8220;You may have an advantage in the eye of the storm,&#8221; Beaton said, as some applicants turn their attention to other schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>Harvard students are \u2018frantic,&#8217; college consultant says<br \/>Wage garnishment for defaulted student loans to begin<br \/>Is college still worth it? It is for most, but not all<\/p>\n<p>Over time, Harvard has become the gold standard of the Ivy League. As of last year, Harvard&#8217;s\u00a0acceptance rate was just under 4%, down from more than 10% two decades ago. Roughly 18% of the Class of 2028 is from abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think Harvard&#8217;s brand on the world stage is so strong and so viral, it would take a long time to lose some of that trust and excitement,&#8221; Beaton said. &#8220;The brand can take a lot of big hits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, students are justifiably nervous as the federal government continues to fire blows at one of the nation&#8217;s oldest and most venerable institutions of higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a roller-coaster ride since last Thursday,&#8221; said Fangzhou Jiang, a student at Harvard&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kennedy School<\/a> and co-founder of Crimson Education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108150617\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A glimpse into the Harvard University campus on May 24, 2025 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. <\/p>\n<p>Vcg | Visual China Group | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>Harvard, Trump battle over international enrollment<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>On Tuesday, the Trump administration\u00a0moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-administrations-stops-new-student-visa-interviews-rcna209305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stop scheduling new interviews<\/a> for international students seeking visas to come to the U.S. and said it plans to expand social media vetting of foreign students, effectively disrupting international enrollment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/27\/trump-team-orders-stop-to-new-student-visa-interviews-as-it-weighs-expanding-social-media-vetting-00370501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a>\u00a0first reported the stop to new student visa interviews.<\/p>\n<p>In the escalating standoff between the federal government and Harvard, the White House also attempted to terminate Harvard&#8217;s student and exchange visitor program certification and cancel all remaining\u00a0federal government contracts with\u00a0Harvard, which are worth a reported $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>The latest moves come after Harvard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/harvard-stand-against-trump-rcna201322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refused to meet<\/a>\u00a0a set of demands issued by the Trump administration&#8217;s Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole instability or uncertainty is quite damaging,&#8221; said Jiang, who has a student visa and would consider transferring across the country to Stanford University, where he is pursuing a dual degree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;It is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students and benefit from their higher tuition payments to help pad their multibillion-dollar endowments,&#8221; Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said\u00a0in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/05\/22\/harvard-university-loses-student-and-exchange-visitor-program-certification-pro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge in Massachusetts on Friday\u00a0temporarily halted the Trump administration&#8217;s ban\u00a0on international students, following a petition from Harvard. A hearing is set for Thursday, May 29, to determine whether the temporary order should be extended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a critical step to protect the rights and opportunities of our international students and scholars, who are vital to the University&#8217;s mission and community,&#8221; Harvard&#8217;s president, Alan Garber, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/president\/news\/2025\/an-update-on-supporting-our-international-students-and-scholars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.
