Jason Smith, R-Mo., speaks during a House Oversight and Accountability Committee impeachment inquiry hearing into U.S. President Joe Biden on Sept. 28, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Ernst | Reuters<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>House Republicans have advanced trillions of tax breaks as part of President Donald Trump&#8217;s economic package.<\/p>\n<p>After debating the legislation overnight, the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees taxes, passed its <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SMITMO_017_xml.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">portion of the legislation<\/a> on Wednesday morning in a 26-19 party-line vote.<\/p>\n<p>But the battle over the deduction for state and local taxes, known as SALT, remains in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>The text released Monday afternoon would raise the SALT cap to $30,000 for those with a modified adjusted gross income of $400,000 or less. But some House lawmakers still want to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lawler4ny\/status\/1922652928638173652\" target=\"_blank\">see a higher limit<\/a> before the full House vote.<\/p>\n<p>While the SALT deduction is a key priority for certain lawmakers in high-tax states, the current $10,000 cap was added to help fund the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, of 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>How college savers can manage 529 plans in a turbulent market<br \/>Social Security COLA for 2026 projected to be lowest in years<br \/>Here&#8217;s the inflation breakdown for April 2025 \u2014 in one chart<\/p>\n<p>Following the vote, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/2025\/05\/14\/ways-and-means-votes-to-make-2017-tax-cuts-permanent-provide-additional-relief-for-workers-reward-investment-in-america-and-hold-woke-elites-accountable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a> that Ways and Means Republicans will &#8220;continue to work closely with President Trump and our House colleagues to get the One, Big, Beautiful Bill that delivers on the President&#8217;s agenda to his desk as soon as possible.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The full House vote may come as early as next week. But the legislation could see significant changes in the Senate, experts say.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>House Republicans&#8217; proposed tax cuts<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The House Ways and Means Committee legislation includes several of Trump&#8217;s campaign priorities, including extensions of tax breaks enacted via the TCJA.<\/p>\n<p>If enacted as drafted, Republicans could also deliver no tax on tips and tax-free overtime pay. But questions remain about the details of these provisions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rather than cutting taxes on Social Security, the plan includes an extra $4,000 deduction for older Americans, which may not fully cover Social Security income, according to some experts.<\/p>\n<p>The $4,000 deduction costs $90 billion over 10 years, compared with $1 trillion for exempting Social Security income from tax, Garrett Watson, director of policy analysis at the Tax Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GS_Watson\/status\/1922398723599954203\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a post Tuesday on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tax filers with no other income sources outside of Social Security would typically see little benefit, while others may see bigger gains from this idea,&#8221; he wrote in that thread.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108130344\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108130344\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000372567\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The House Ways and Means bill also extends the maximum child tax credit of $2,000 enacted via the TCJA, and temporarily raises the tax break to $2,500 per child through 2028.<\/p>\n<p>However, some policy experts have criticized the proposed credit design since lower earners typically can&#8217;t claim the full amount.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed legislation &#8220;did nothing for the 17 million children that are left out of the current $2,000 credit,&#8221; Kris Cox, director of federal tax policy with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities&#8217; federal fiscal policy division, told CNBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Don\u2019t miss these insights from CNBC PRO<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/14\/republicans-trumps-tax-bill-salt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
