What to watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108141660\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>President Donald Trump waits for the arrival of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House in Washington, DC, on May 6, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Watson | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Debate for the House Republicans&#8217; tax bill is underway \u2014 and experts are watching to see which of President Donald Trump&#8217;s priorities make the final cut.<\/p>\n<p>The House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax, released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SMITMO_017_xml.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the full text of its portion<\/a>\u00a0of the bill Monday afternoon, and started to debate over provisions on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>GOP lawmakers included several of Trump&#8217;s campaign priorities, including tax cut extensions, no tax on tips and tax-free\u00a0overtime pay. Rather than cutting taxes on Social Security, the plan includes an extra $4,000 deduction for older Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The early bill did not include a higher tax rate\u00a0on some of the wealthiest Americans or plans to end the so-called &#8220;carried interest loophole,&#8221; which are both ideas that Trump supported. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the final bill could change significantly before the committee vote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>House GOP tax bill calls for &#8216;SALT&#8217; deduction cap of $30,000 for most taxpayers<br \/>Stagflation is a looming economic risk\u2014here&#8217;s what it means for your money<br \/>Here&#8217;s how to save on groceries amid food price inflation<\/p>\n<p>The early version of the GOP tax bill would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jct.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost about $3.7 trillion<\/a>\u00a0over 10 years, according to estimates from the Joint Committee on Taxation. That&#8217;s under the Republicans&#8217; $4.5 trillion limit, which could leave room for other priorities to be added or increased during Tuesday&#8217;s negotiations, experts say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really important for any additional tax cuts to be paid for,&#8221; which will impact individual provisions, said Shai Akabas, vice president of economic policy for the Bipartisan Policy Center.<\/p>\n<p>As the debate heats up, here are two key areas to watch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>The battle over the &#8216;SALT&#8217; deduction<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>With a slim House Republican majority, the limit on the deduction for state and local taxes, known as SALT, has been a key issue in tax package negotiations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Enacted via the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, of 2017, the current $10,000 cap will expire after 2025 without action from Congress.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House text released Monday would boost the SALT deduction limit to $30,000 for most taxpayers. This would phase out once modified adjusted gross income exceeds $400,000.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some lawmakers have already <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lawler4ny\/status\/1922048035917594792\" target=\"_blank\">pushed a higher SALT deduction cap<\/a>, which could still be possible with wiggle room in the budget, experts say.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108143427\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108143427\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000375588\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Child tax credit boost<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Republican lawmakers also want to expand the child tax credit, a change that was passed via a bipartisan House bill in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>TCJA temporarily increased the maximum child tax credit to $2,000 from $1,000 per child under age 17, and boosted eligibility. These changes are scheduled to sunset after 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary House GOP text calls for raising the credit to $2,500 per child through 2028, as long as both parents have a Social Security number. The $1,400 refundable portion, which is available without taxes owed, would be indexed for inflation.<\/p>\n<p>However, the proposal &#8220;does nothing for the 17 million children who currently don&#8217;t get the full $2,000 child tax credit because their families&#8217; incomes are too low,&#8221; said Chuck Marr, vice president for federal tax policy for the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/13\/republican-trump-tax-plan\/.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump waits for the arrival of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House in Washington, DC, on May 6, 2025.
