Trump this month paused major tariff increases on other countries for 90 days, while hiking duties further on goods from China to 145%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China&#8217;s interests. If this happens, China will not accept it and will resolutely take reciprocal countermeasures,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofcom.gov.cn\/xwfb\/xwfyrth\/art\/2025\/art_3277f51446f143eda489a1bd5de6f72f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Chinese Ministry of Commerce<\/a> said, according to a CNBC translation.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry cautioned about the risk to all countries once international trade returns to the &#8220;law of the jungle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The statement also sought to cast China as willing to work with all parties and &#8220;defend international fairness and justice,&#8221; while describing the U.S. actions as &#8220;abusing tariffs&#8221; and &#8220;unilateral bullying.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108133149\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108133149\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000373185\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In a shift toward a harder stance this month, China retaliated against U.S. tariffs with levies of 125% on imports of American goods. Beijing has also restricted critical minerals exports and put several, mostly smaller, U.S. companies on blacklists that restrict their ability to work with Chinese companies.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts don&#8217;t expect the U.S. and China to reach a deal anytime soon, although Trump on Thursday said he expected an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/program\/white-house-event\/president-trump-signs-executive-orders\/658767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreement could be reached in the next three to four weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping last week visited Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia in his first overseas trip of 2025. In official Chinese readouts of his meetings with the three countries&#8217; leaders, Xi called for joint efforts to oppose tariffs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/eng\/xw\/zyxw\/202504\/t20250415_11594695.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;unilateral bullying<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since Trump imposed tariffs on China during his first term, the Asian country has increased its trade with Southeast Asia, now China&#8217;s largest trading partner on a regional basis. The U.S. remains China&#8217;s largest trading partner on a single-country basis.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, China&#8217;s Ministry of Commerce replaced its top international trade negotiator with Li Chenggang, who also became a vice minister and has been the country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wto.org\/english\/forums_e\/public_forum21_e\/pf21_bios_e.htm?PanID=4690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ambassador to the World Trade Organization<\/a>.
