{"id":12891,"date":"2025-04-03T13:16:33","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T13:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=12891"},"modified":"2025-04-03T13:16:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T13:16:33","slug":"how-to-file-for-a-free-tax-extension-if-you-cant-make-april-15-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=12891","title":{"rendered":"How to file for a free tax extension if you can&#8217;t make April 15 deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108125021\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Galina Zhigalova | Moment | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If you can&#8217;t file your taxes by the April 15 deadline, there&#8217;s a free, easy way to submit a federal tax extension online, experts say.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1 in 3 American admit that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipx1031.com\/americas-biggest-tax-procrastinators-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">procrastinate when it comes filing their taxes<\/a>, according to a January survey of more than 1,000 U.S. filers from IPX1031, an investment property exchange service.\u00a0In addition, about 25% do not feel prepared to file their taxes, the survey found.<\/p>\n<p>As of March 21, the IRS received roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-march-21-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80 million individual returns<\/a> of the 140 million expected this filing season, the agency&#8217;s latest reporting shows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>How to spring-clean your finances. Here&#8217;s who will be affected<\/p>\n<p>Many natural disaster victims have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">automatic tax extension<\/a>, which varies by jurisdiction. Military members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/extension-of-deadlines-combat-zone-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serving in a combat zone<\/a> also have more time to file.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the federal tax deadline for the majority of taxpayers is April 15. It&#8217;s possible to push that due date to Oct. 15 by filing for an extension.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8220;it&#8217;s an extension to file, not an extension to pay,&#8221; said Jo Anna Fellon, managing director at financial services firm CBIZ.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#002f6c\">\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an extension to file, not an extension to pay.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>After the tax deadline, you will start incurring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/failure-to-pay-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure-to-pay penalty<\/a> of 0.5% of your unpaid taxes for each month or partial month that your taxes remain unpaid. The failure-to-pay penalty has a maximum charge of 25% of your unpaid taxes.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s cheaper than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/payments\/failure-to-file-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure-to-file penalty<\/a>, which applies when you don&#8217;t submit your return by the deadline. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid taxes monthly, also limited to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>But you&#8217;ll also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/interest-rates-remain-the-same-for-the-second-quarter-of-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">owe interest<\/a> on your unpaid balance, which is currently 7% and accrues daily after April 15.<\/p>\n<p>You can estimate your taxes owed by creating a &#8220;pro forma return&#8221; \u2014 or mock version of your filing \u2014 using as many tax forms as possible, Fellon said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>The &#8216;easiest way&#8217; to file an extension<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>There are a few free options to file a tax extension.<\/p>\n<p>For federal taxes, you can complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-4868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form 4868<\/a> and mail it to the IRS. But it&#8217;s better to file digitally to avoid processing delays amid the agency&#8217;s shrinking workforce, experts say.
