The date marks just how far into the new year full-time female workers have to keep working to make what their male counterparts typically made in just the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, women earn just 83 cents for every dollar earned by men, according to an\u00a0analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nwlc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2025-Window-Into-the-Wage-Gap-Factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Women&#8217;s Law Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>Stock volatility poses an &#8216;opportunity,&#8217; investment analyst says<br \/>What financial advisors tell investors about market turmoil<br \/>Consumer outlook sinks as recession fears take hold<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the inequality is magnified. Based on today&#8217;s wage gap, a woman just starting out will lose up to <a href=\"https:\/\/nwlc.org\/resource\/the-lifetime-wage-gap-state-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1 million<\/a> over a 40-year career, according to the Center&#8217;s research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When you look at it by race and gender, that disparity is even wider,&#8221; said Jasmine Tucker, the National Women&#8217;s Law Center&#8217;s vice president of research. &#8220;This means that women are never, ever going to catch up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>In fact, it could take roughly five generations to close the pay gap worldwide, according to 2024 estimates by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-gender-gap-report-2024\/digest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Based on current data, it will take 134 years to reach full parity,&#8221; the latest global gender gap report said.<\/p>\n<p>In Northern America, despite achieving equality in educational attainment, there are still wide disparities in earned income and women&#8217;s representation in senior leadership positions, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where diversity, equity, and inclusion [DEI] efforts are longer lasting, the returns follow,&#8221; the World Economic Forum report also said. In the U.S., at least, many of those efforts are now being pared back or scrapped entirely to\u00a0reflect a new political reality\u00a0and the priorities of the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>Why the pay gap persists<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>There is no single explanation for why progress toward narrowing the pay gap has mostly stalled, according to a separate 2023 report by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2023\/03\/01\/the-enduring-grip-of-the-gender-pay-gap\/#how-the-gender-pay-gap-increase-with-age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Women are still more likely than men to pursue careers in lower-paying industries, and to take time out of the labor force or reduce the number of hours worked\u00a0because of\u00a0caretaking responsibilities\u00a0\u2014 often referred to as the &#8220;motherhood penalty.&#8221; Systemic bias has also played a role, Pew found.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Long-term consequences of inequity<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The most important part is not just that [women] make less, it&#8217;s what that turns into \u2014 the wealth gap,&#8221; said Cary\u00a0Carbonaro<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=u001.gqh-2BaxUzlo7XKIuSly0rC1aSJr5xkFAjgpXkOZLopdhFaO4-2FsOqCt7wm-2BojLqPPxpygl_1-2FlQ5R7jXHW5rdNHc-2FQfdhvilG1ddEHqUOdmjiMewogXq88NLQTOA3rwAYki-2Bu14StBHvR24W-2BnKmxBkACktqtTJqjsF2f0-2FTUmDfFpkt4fkUFjk1POypRNnk-2BucWZ5uHwbHMwYRbm-2FQBo5xcFn4k4UECyyfda53zvzuFHy2vU6Fdvc94DwIUnsHdydiOPOCsE8HFMZ96EX-2F1L45ppI3d4WYu86sh5T0wMUGcQ6PxscMd8EtrptVMaS9jwGBQnXsk29WXC-2BxQQN-2BxFR9dZLe5IpeR2WgfB5UzqHDayc3oEMTq1scUaLhyFN0CoVzZB5PHYGY30IBs5Y2z0MXc9aeFumxu2W3BBDi54s2yCeXD0I-3D__;!!PIZeeW5wscynRQ!pFj4JS7rDXEoRfKda5HvmJXbobKiGOKdcJhEM51p__xzZny_mTJ2uzOdR2GJJJHMAxLhWfVUefWf3-it75SKXpCnp5jEWTOO-0mVnQ%24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">,<\/a>\u00a0a certified financial planner and managing wealth advisor at\u00a0Scottsdale, Arizona-based Ashton Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do women earn less than men, but women also save less each month and feel less optimistic about their long-term financial standing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107382036\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107382036\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000333443\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Heading into 2025, women were contributing $1,825.18 a month, on average, to their various savings accounts, while men contributed $2,352.34, according to New York Life&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorklife.com\/newsroom\/2025\/wealth-watch-2025-outlook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2025 Wealth Watch survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the year, women aim to save $9,463.98, on average, compared to the $17,963.13 that their male counterparts aim to put away, the report found.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also tend to invest more conservatively, other research by <a href=\"https:\/\/saf.wellsfargoadvisors.com\/emx\/dctm\/Research\/wfii\/wfii_reports\/Investment_Strategy\/women_investing.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a> also shows.<\/p>\n<p>Together, that contributes to a significant savings shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>Although there is no immediate solution to achieving pay equity, there are some measures that can help women shore up their economic standing, Carbonaro said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Step one is a budget: what&#8217;s coming and what&#8217;s going out,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Spend less than you make.
