{"id":12276,"date":"2025-03-24T08:08:21","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T08:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=12276"},"modified":"2025-03-24T08:08:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T08:08:21","slug":"wholesale-egg-prices-have-plunged-retail-prices-may-follow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finderica.com\/?p=12276","title":{"rendered":"Wholesale egg prices have &#8216;plunged.&#8217; Retail prices may follow"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108117036\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>A shopper looks at eggs for sale in a grocery store in the Manhattan borough of New York City, Feb. 25, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Spencer Platt | Getty Images News | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Wholesale egg prices have fallen significantly in recent weeks, a dynamic that may soon offer relief for consumers shell-shocked by record-high prices at the grocery store this year.<\/p>\n<p>How quickly \u2014 and how much \u2014 retail prices will fall is unclear, however, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>Wholesale prices dropped to $4.83 per dozen Friday, a 44% decline from their peak of $8.58 per dozen on Feb. 28, according to Expana, which tracks agricultural commodity prices.<\/p>\n<p>The pullback comes amid a reprieve from major bird flu outbreaks so far in March and weaker consumer demand, which have helped the nation&#8217;s egg supply to start recovering, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ams.usda.gov\/mnreports\/ams_3725.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market analysis<\/a> published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Prices have &#8220;plunged,&#8221; said Karyn Rispoli, an egg market analyst and managing editor at Expana.<\/p>\n<p>Market dynamics are also putting &#8220;extreme pressure&#8221; on wholesale prices to fall further, Rispoli wrote in an e-mail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>Retail prices hit record high<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Consumers paid $5.90 for a dozen large grade-A eggs, on average, in February, a record high, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/graph\/?g=1EpWd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>. Retail prices have blown past their prior record \u2014 $4.82 per dozen in January 2023 \u2014 and have nearly doubled from a year ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108102782\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108102782\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000366729\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Prices had surged amid a deadly outbreak of bird flu in the U.S., which has killed millions of egg-laying chickens and crimped egg supply, according to agricultural economists and market experts. The U.S. Department of Justice also opened an antitrust investigation into the pricing and supply practices of major producers.<\/p>\n<p>However, bird flu outbreaks seem to have tapered off in March, at least for now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Slowing [bird flu] outbreaks are leading to improved supply availability and wholesale market prices have responded with sharp declines over the past week,&#8221; the USDA wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>Consumer outlook sinks as recession fears take hold<br \/>Here&#8217;s the inflation breakdown for February 2025<br \/>This step is &#8216;really important&#8217; for home sellers in 2025<\/p>\n<p>Consumers, dissuaded by high prices and purchase restrictions imposed by many grocers, have also been buying fewer eggs, helping to ease supply shortfalls, Rispoli said.<\/p>\n<p>Households also stockpiled eggs because they feared prices would keep climbing \u2014 a flashback of sorts to consumer behavior witnessed in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic \u2014 meaning there isn&#8217;t an immediate need for them to replenish supply, she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Consumers still &#8216;feeling the peak market&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>While there have been some early signs of easing prices, it&#8217;s unclear how rapidly \u2014 and to what extent \u2014 consumers may get more relief, experts said.<\/p>\n<p>For one, there&#8217;s generally a lag of at least two to three weeks between a change in wholesale costs and subsequent<strong> <\/strong>retail pricing \u2014 meaning consumers are still largely &#8220;feeling the peak market when they go to buy eggs,&#8221; Rispoli said.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, retailers ultimately choose &#8220;how closely they want to track wholesale prices,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Egg demand is also likely to stay elevated as the Easter holiday, which falls on April 20 this year, approaches, according to Kevin Bergquist, an egg analyst at the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Egg prices will likely remain highly variable for the near future, but at a higher-than-usual level,&#8221; Bergquist wrote in a March market update. &#8220;In the short term, we will likely see a continuation of high egg prices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Don\u2019t miss these insights from CNBC PRO<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/17\/wholesale-egg-prices-have-plunged-retail-prices-may-follow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A shopper looks at eggs for sale in a grocery store in the Manhattan borough of New York City, Feb. 25, 2025.
