However, most eligible taxpayers don&#8217;t claim it, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/save-for-retirement-now-get-a-tax-credit-later-savers-credit-can-help-low-and-moderate-income-taxpayers-save-more-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retirement savings contributions credit<\/a>, or saver&#8217;s credit, helps offset funds added to an individual retirement account, 401(k) plan or another workplace plan. The tax break is worth up to $1,000 per filer.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not too late if you didn&#8217;t make a qualifying contribution last year. There&#8217;s still time to make IRA deposits before April 15 to claim the credit on 2024 returns.<\/p>\n<p>However, &#8220;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transamericainstitute.org\/research\/publications\/details\/only-half-united-states-workers-aware-of-retirement-savers-tax-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saver&#8217;s credit<\/a> is a well-kept secret,&#8221; Catherine Collinson, CEO and president of Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies said in a February report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/>Here&#8217;s why Trump tariffs may raise your car insurance premiums<br \/>Don&#8217;t wait to file your taxes this season, experts say. Here&#8217;s why<br \/>As tariffs ramp up, here&#8217;s an investment option to protect against inflation<\/p>\n<p>Only about half of U.S. workers know about the saver&#8217;s credit, according to a survey from Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, which polled more than 10,000 U.S. adults in September and October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That percentage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transamericainstitute.org\/docs\/saverscredit\/who-is-aware-of-the-savers-credit-infographic.pdf?sfvrsn=59465e9b_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drops to 44%<\/a> among taxpayers with a household income of less than $50,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#002f6c\">\n<div>\n<p>Awareness of the credit is very low across the board.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Emerson Sprick<\/p>\n<p>Associate director for the Bipartisan Policy Center&#8217;s Economic Policy Program<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Awareness of the credit is very low across the board,&#8221; but it&#8217;s even lower among taxpayers who could qualify to use it, said Emerson Sprick, associate director for the Bipartisan Policy Center&#8217;s Economic Policy Program.<\/p>\n<p>To that point, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p4801.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5.8% of returns<\/a> claimed the saver&#8217;s credit in 2022, according to a the most recent IRS data. The average credit value that year was $194, according to a Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies analysis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"><\/a>How the saver&#8217;s credit works<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The saver&#8217;s credit can offset as much as 50% of retirement contributions up to $2,000 for single filers or $4,000 for married couples filing jointly, for maximum credits of $1,000 or $2,000, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The credit provides a dollar-for-dollar reduction of levies owed, which could reduce your tax bill or boost your refund. But the tax break is not &#8220;refundable,&#8221; which means there&#8217;s no benefit with $0 tax liability, Sprick explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The way it&#8217;s calculated is fairly complex,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/retirement-plans\/plan-participant-employee\/retirement-savings-contributions-credit-savers-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">income phase-outs<\/a> to claim 50%, 20% or 10% of your contribution, depending on your filing status and adjusted gross income. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/ita\/do-i-qualify-for-the-retirement-savings-contributions-credit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use an IRS tool<\/a> to see if you&#8217;re eligible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For 2024, your adjusted gross income can&#8217;t exceed $23,000 for single filers or $46,000 for married couples for the 50% credit.\u00a0The percentages drop to 20% and 10%, respectively, as earnings increase, with a complete phase-out above $38,250 for individuals or $76,500 for joint filers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108082080\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-108082080\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000362588\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"><\/a>Credit will soon be replaced<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Because of the credit&#8217;s design and workers&#8217; lack of awareness, &#8220;the uptake of this is really low,&#8221; Sprick said.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s part of the motivation for the &#8220;saver&#8217;s match&#8221; enacted via Secure 2.0, which will replace the saver&#8217;s credit in 2027 and deposit money directly into taxpayers accounts, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone hopes that it&#8217;s going to be easier,&#8221; Sprick said.
